Eat More Fruits and Veggies
To Provide Disease Preventing Phytonutrients and Curb Appetites for Sweets
Winter Overeating: Wintertime, with Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year, can be a time of happiness and joy. But people often feel worse after the holidays due to excessive eating and drinking. Even people who were not overweight before Thanksgiving can find that they have gained weight after New Year.
Overeating = Overweight = Disease: Most Americans and other people living in affluent societies are overweight. Their state of being overweight causes many health concerns including, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, joint pain, fatigue, and depression. Many overweight people try dieting, but it just doesn’t seem to work. After the diet, they may eat even more.
The Overeating - Overweight Cycle: People in affluent societies tend to overeat because they are actually starved for nutrients. Affluent societies have an abundance of sweet, fatty, processed foods. These foods are high in calories, but low in vitamins, minerals, and other disease fighting nutrients. Even foods that seem salty like French fries and pizza are quickly turned into sugar by the body. When there is too much sugar in the bloodstream, the pancreas works overtime to provide enough insulin to make the sugar useable as energy. Eventually, the pancreas can’t function fast enough and diabetes occurs. Also, because there are little other nutrients in the French fries and pizza, the brain tells the body to eat more!!!! So, most people eat more French fries and pizza and the cycle repeats.
How to Stop the Cycle: To stop the cycle and get you body back in line, treat yourself with a variety of fruits and vegetables. Fresh fruits and vegetables are loaded with vitamins, minerals, fiber, and other nutrients that your body and mind need for health. Try eating some raw fruits and vegetables before you sit down to eat. You will be amazed by your feelings of fullness and satisfaction. You will have more energy and your body will thank you for the gift of health.
Here are some ideas for how to serve the fresh fruits and vegetables. Make sure you eat some, too!
• Serve slices of Red, Yellow and Green PEPPERS with a Hummus Dip
• Serve skewers of STRAWBERRIES, KIWIS, and HONEYDEW melons
• Serve a huge bowl of freshly cut APPLES
• Serve whole STRAWBERRIES or CHERRIES sprinkled with cocoa powder
• Serve a platter of CELERY sticks, raw CAULIFLOWER, BROCCOLI , and string beans
• Serve a green, leafy vegetable salad with tomatoes, avocado, and fresh orange juice for a dressing.
